I believe in the timeless principles of people taking responsibility for the harm they causes others. Placing responsibility on the person who caused the harm has numerous benefits for our community. We all agree that injuries should be avoided and our community should keep injury prevention as a top priority. When wrongdoers know that they will have to pay for their wrongdoing, they have incentives to follow the safety rules in the first place. Second, placing the costs of wrongdoing on the person who caused the harm means that the community does not have to support the victim, allowing public funds to be used for the public good. Third, having a group of our community enforcing the safety rules through the jury system make a public statement that our community values the safety of all our members. When our community values safety, rules breakers either change their behavior by following the safety rules or they leave our community. The result is the same, a safer community. I feel honored to be a small part of keeping our community safe by prosecuting wrongdoers for the harm they cause accident victims. I believe the justice system exists to help all of us maintain safe communities. Whether or not your case goes to court or settles quickly, the result is the same–a safer community.
